Updated 6 min readBy Swakopmund Backpackers

The Hansa Hotel is Swakopmund’s classic hotel: a building dating from 1905 on Hendrik Witbooi Street in the historic centre, about five minutes’ walk from the beach. It has 49 standard rooms, five family rooms and a small number of suites, a dining room known for its dinners, a café and a fireplace bar, and in 2026 a standard double costs approx. N$3,440 per night with breakfast. It suits travellers who want old-world character and a central location rather than sea views.

This independent guide is based on the hotel’s official website and current listings. It covers the building, rooms, prices, food, parking and how the Hansa compares with other Swakopmund hotels.

Location#

The Hansa is at 3 Hendrik Witbooi Street, with its historic café side on Daniel Tjongarero Avenue, in the heart of the old town. You are:

  • About five minutes’ walk from the beach and the Mole.
  • A short walk from the lighthouse, the museum and the colonial buildings on our Swakopmund history and architecture walk, including Woermann House and the Lutheran church.
  • Surrounded by restaurants, cafés and shops, so you rarely need a car once you have parked.

Walvis Bay Airport is about 40 km away. For routes and transfers, see how to get to Swakopmund.

History and building#

The Hansa trades on its age. The hotel occupies a classical building dating from 1905, during the German colonial period, and calls itself Namibia’s oldest and finest hotel. The historic part of the building now houses Bojo’s Café.

Swakopmund still has strong ties with German-speaking countries, and the Hansa is popular with German-speaking travellers, many of whom search for it as “Hotel Hansa Swakopmund”. The website has a German version, and the hotel leans into its heritage: a classic dining room, a café in the old building and a bar with a fireplace.

Suites add a lounge area, a bathrobe and a Nespresso machine. The hotel is non-smoking throughout.

The five family rooms are individually decorated.

Children sharing with adults pay the following supplements, according to the hotel’s published rates:

  • 0–4 years: free, including breakfast.
  • 5–12 years: approx. N$190.
  • 13–18 years: approx. N$280.

Specials#

The Hansa publishes occasional specials on its website. In 2026 these included:

  • Stay 4, pay 3 (“Hansa Refresher”) for stays until 31 October 2026, at approx. N$1,375 per person sharing.
  • Business single rate: approx. N$1,220 per room per night including breakfast, Sunday to Friday.
  • SADC residents’ season special (January to June 2026): approx. N$1,205 per person sharing.
  • Self-catering apartments: approx. N$1,130 per night for two people.

Specials are subject to availability and cannot be combined. Check the website for current offers, especially if you are planning a longer stay.

Restaurants and bar#

The Hansa is as much a place to eat as to sleep, and many visitors come only for dinner.

  • The Dining Room: a hot and cold breakfast buffet with dishes cooked to order, and an à la carte dinner menu built on local Namibian produce, with its own wine list. The website also refers to an Equestrian Room for dinner.
  • Bojo’s Café: in the historic part of the hotel, with indoor and outdoor seating, serving cakes, snacks, light dishes and daily lunch specials.
  • The Private Bar and Terrace: a relaxed bar with a fireplace for cold nights, an extensive wine list, cocktails and the house speciality, a Hansa coffee prepared at your table.

Coastal nights are cool for much of the year, so the fireplace bar is one of the cosiest spots in town after dinner. For more ideas, see our top restaurants in Swakopmund and Swakopmund nightlife guide.

Facilities and services#

  • 24-hour manned reception.
  • Secure parking.
  • Garden.
  • Room service.
  • Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing.
  • Activities booking desk.
  • Foreign exchange at reception.
  • Courtesy transport (ask what it covers).
  • Babysitting on request.
  • Beach towels and lunch packs for day trips.
  • Conference facilities.
  • A small shopping arcade with a café, jeweller, art and gift shops.

There is no swimming pool, and the hotel does not advertise a spa or gym. If you want those, compare the Strand Hotel (spa and gym) or the Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre (pool).

Parking#

The Hansa lists secure parking. That matters in Swakopmund, where theft from parked cars is the most common crime affecting visitors. Even in a secure car park, take valuables and luggage into your room. Our is Swakopmund safe guide has more practical advice.

Who the Hansa suits#

Good for:

  • History lovers and travellers who like classic, traditional hotels.
  • German-speaking visitors who want a familiar style of hotel.
  • Food lovers who want a proper dinner without leaving the building.
  • Business travellers (the single rate and meeting rooms help).

Less good for:

Pros and cons#

Pros Cons
Historic building and old-world atmosphere No sea views
Central location, five minutes from the beach Traditional rather than modern rooms
On-site dinner, café and fireplace bar No pool, spa or gym
Secure parking and 24-hour reception Strict cancellation policy close to arrival
Specials for longer stays and business travellers Sea and dunes are a drive or walk away

Is the Hansa Hotel worth it?#

At approx. N$3,440 for a double with breakfast, the Hansa costs well under half the price of a standard room at the Strand Hotel and is in a similar bracket to The Delight. You do not get the beach on your doorstep, but you do get a central, historic hotel with one of the best in-house dining rooms in Swakopmund. For travellers who value atmosphere and a good dinner over views, it is good value.

Booking tips#

  1. Book direct for specials. Offers are listed on the hotel’s website and handled by its reservations team.
  2. Check the cancellation terms. The hotel’s published policy charges 20% for cancellations more than 30 days ahead and 100% within seven days of arrival.
  3. Book dinner too. Ask for a table in the Dining Room when you reserve your room, especially on weekends.
  4. Watch the November rate change. Many Namibian hotels raise rates from 1 November, so a stay over that date may be priced at two different rates.
  5. Book early for peak season. Mid-December to mid-January and Easter are the busiest periods.
  6. Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out at 10:00. Use the activities desk to book tours such as the Living Desert tour or a Sandwich Harbour trip.
