The Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre is the town’s largest hotel, built around Swakopmund’s original railway station from 1901 on Theo-Ben Gurirab Avenue. It has around 90 rooms, a big outdoor pool, the Platform One restaurant, a lounge and sports bar, conference halls and the Mermaid Casino, and in 2026 rooms start from approx. N$3,750 per room per night. It is a good pick for families and travellers who want facilities, a pool and easy parking within walking distance of the centre.

This independent guide is based on the hotel’s official information from Legacy Hotels & Resorts and other published sources. It covers the history of the building, the rooms, prices, facilities and how it compares with Swakopmund’s other well-known hotels.

Location#

The hotel is at 2 Theo-Ben Gurirab Avenue, on the inland side of the town centre. From the front door it is roughly:

  • 10 to 15 minutes’ walk to the beach, the Mole and the lighthouse.
  • 5 to 10 minutes to the main shopping streets and many restaurants.
  • A few minutes to The Delight, which is on the same avenue.

It is not a seafront hotel, but the trade-off is space: a large garden, a pool and plenty of parking, which the hotels near the Mole cannot offer. Walvis Bay Airport is about 40 km away, and Windhoek about four hours by road; see how to get to Swakopmund.

History: from railway station to hotel#

The building is one of the most important in Swakopmund’s history.

  • 1901: The station opens as the coastal terminus of the first state railway line in German South West Africa, linking Swakopmund with Windhoek. It is attributed to the architect Willi Sander, who later designed the Swakopmund lighthouse.
  • 1914: The line is extended south along the shore to Walvis Bay.
  • 1972: The station building is declared a national monument.
  • 1980: The Walvis Bay line is rerouted behind the dunes. Trains today stop at a newer station further inland.
  • 1994: After the old station closes and is extensively restored, the building reopens as the centrepiece of the Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre.

Like much of the colonial infrastructure of the time, the railway was built with forced and contract labour, a part of the story covered in our history walk.

Today the historic station holds the public areas, including the lobby, restaurant and lounge, while the guest rooms are in a newer wing that was designed to complement the original architecture. Black-and-white photographs of early Swakopmund, the first trains and old vehicles hang throughout.

The station, easy to spot by its turret roofs, is one of the stops on our Swakopmund history and architecture walk.

Rooms and approximate prices#

A Legacy Hotels factsheet lists 90 rooms over two floors, including two luxury suites and a room adapted for wheelchair users. The official site currently shows these categories:

Room type Size Sleeps Approx. from (per room, 2026)
Family Twin 20 m² 3 N$3,750
Standard Twin 20 m² 3 N$3,980
Standard Double not stated 2 N$3,980
Luxury Queen 25 m² 2 N$4,165
Luxury King 25.6 m² 2 N$4,610
King Suite 40 m² 2 N$5,740

In euros, that is roughly €185–€285 per room per night (about US$210–US$325).

Rooms are air-conditioned and en suite, with a TV and minibar, and some have a private terrace facing the gardens. Members of Legacy’s Lifestyle Rewards loyalty programme get 10% off.

Restaurants and bars#

  • Platform One: the main restaurant, with à la carte dining and speciality buffets in a Victorian-style setting. The name is a nod to the station, and the walls are hung with historic railway photographs.
  • Whistle Stop Lounge: a coffee shop and eatery for light meals, serving Two Beards coffee, with a big screen for sport.
  • Conductors Cabin: a small sports bar.

Pool, casino and other facilities#

  • Swimming pool: a large outdoor pool in the garden, flanked by fountains, in front of the room wing.
  • Mermaid Casino: the hotel’s casino, part of the entertainment centre. Adults only.
  • Conference and events: two large halls (Spitzkoppe 1 and 2) that combine for up to 480 delegates, three boardrooms, and garden and courtyard spaces for events of up to 500 people. Conferences and functions are a big part of the business, so public areas can be busy when events are on.
  • Secure parking: on site, with space for around 300 cars according to the hotel’s factsheet.
  • Wi-Fi: available.
  • Tour desk: reception can book desert trips, quad biking, sandboarding and other activities with local operators.

Who it suits#

Good for:

  • Families who want a pool and space for children to run around.
  • Self-drive travellers with a large 4x4 or camper who need easy, secure parking.
  • History and railway enthusiasts.
  • Conference and wedding guests.
  • Travellers who like having a restaurant, bar and casino on site.

Less good for:

  • Travellers who want sea views or to step out onto the beach.
  • Anyone looking for a small, personal guesthouse.
  • Light sleepers when a big function is on.
  • Backpackers on a tight budget: see Swakopmund backpackers and hostels.

Pros and cons#

Pros Cons
Historic national-monument station building Not on the seafront
Large outdoor pool and garden Standard rooms are small (about 20 m²)
Lots of secure parking Big, busy hotel rather than a personal one
Restaurant, lounge, sports bar and casino on site Conferences and functions can fill public areas
Central and walkable Confirm whether breakfast is included

Is it worth it?#

If you want a pool, easy parking and plenty going on, yes. At approx. N$3,750–N$4,600 per room, it costs roughly half of a standard room at the Strand Hotel and is in a similar range to the Hansa Hotel and The Delight. The Strand wins on location and views, the Hansa on intimacy and dining, and The Delight on modern design and breakfast. The Swakopmund Hotel wins on facilities, and on the sheer fun of sleeping next to a 1901 railway station.

Booking tips#

  1. Check what the rate includes. Some rates are room only, so confirm breakfast before booking.
  2. Join Lifestyle Rewards if you book direct; the hotel advertises 10% off for members.
  3. Ask about events. If you want a quiet weekend, ask whether a large wedding or conference is booked.
  4. Request a garden or pool-facing room if you have children.
  5. Ask for the ground floor if stairs are a problem; rooms are spread over two floors.
  6. Book early for peak season. Mid-December to mid-January and Easter are the busiest times in Swakopmund.

The hotel's official site lists 2026 rates from approx. N$3,750 to N$4,600 per room per night for twin, family and luxury rooms, and approx. N$5,750 for a king suite. Confirm whether breakfast is included and check for loyalty or seasonal discounts.
