Quad biking in Swakopmund means a guided ride into the dune belt just south of town, part of the Dorob National Park, on easy-to-handle quads that need no previous experience. Rides run from 30 minutes to three hours. In late 2026 the main operator, Desert Explorers, charges N$590 for one hour, N$690 for 90 minutes and N$890 for two hours, with free pickup from Swakopmund accommodation. It is fast, scenic and one of the easiest adventure activities to fit into a short stay.
Why go quad biking here?#
The dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are big, steep and endlessly rolling, and they sit right between the town and the Atlantic. On a quad you cover far more of that landscape than on foot: crest a ridge and you see the ocean on one side and nothing but sand on the other. Following the long dune ridges behind a guide is a genuine thrill, yet controlled enough that complete beginners do it every day.
The established operators also follow the park rules about where you may ride. That matters, because the desert here is more fragile than it looks. Our Namib Desert guide explains why.
How a quad bike tour works#
- Pickup. Most operators collect you from your accommodation in Swakopmund. From Walvis Bay there may be a transfer charge for small groups.
- Briefing and practice. You sign an indemnity, get a helmet, and the guide explains the controls. Then you ride a short, flat practice loop until you are comfortable.
- Into the dunes. The group rides in single file behind the lead guide, with a second guide at the back on bigger tours. Following the guide’s tracks keeps you off sensitive areas and away from dangerous slip faces.
- Photo and view stops. Guides stop on high dunes for photos and to regroup.
- Faster sections. On longer rides the guide opens up the pace once they see how the group handles the bikes.

| Quad + lie-down sandboarding combo | 3 hours | N$1,100 | Daily |
Children under 9 ride free as passengers with an adult. Most rides need a minimum of two paying riders. Always check how much of the time is actual riding, because the briefing and practice take the first 10–15 minutes.
Which length should you choose?#
- 30–45 minutes gives you a taste and a few photos. Fine for nervous riders, but much of it is briefing.
- One hour is the most booked option and enough to reach the bigger dunes.
- 90 minutes to two hours is the sweet spot. You go further, the guide lets the group speed up, and you reach the high ridges with ocean views. Two hours costs only N$300 more than one.
- The Explorer ride adds stops to look for desert wildlife and plants, a good choice if you cannot fit in the separate Living Desert tour.
- The sundowner ride times the ride for late-afternoon light, with a drink on a dune top as the sky turns orange.
What you see on a ride#
- Rolling dune ridges with long, smooth crests that are great fun to follow once you have your confidence.
- Big drops and bowls that guides take slowly, showing you how to keep the quad straight on the descent.
- Ocean views from the higher dunes, with the Atlantic and the B2 coastal road below.
- Wildlife signs on longer rides: beetle and lizard tracks, and sometimes the animals themselves.
- Changing light. In the early morning the dunes are soft and pastel; at sunset they glow orange with deep shadows.
Quad bike, fat bike or 4x4?#
| Quad bike | Fat bike | Guided 4x4 tour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You drive? | Yes | Yes (pedal or e-bike) | No |
| Thrill | High | Low–medium | Medium–high |
| Price (approx. 2026) | N$590–890 | N$520 (e-bike N$620) for 2 hours | N$2,700–3,350 half day |
| Typical trip | 1–2 hours near town | 2 hours in the dunes | Half or full day, e.g. Sandwich Harbour |
If you want to sit back and enjoy the biggest dune scenery without driving, a Sandwich Harbour tour is the better choice. If you want something quieter and greener, Swakopmund Fat Bike Tours runs guided rides on wide-tyred bikes; see our adventure activities guide.
Quad biking operators#
Desert Explorers#
One of the biggest adventure centres in Swakopmund, on Nathaniel Maxuilili Street. It runs everything in the price table above, plus a “Surf and Turf” combo that pairs a morning catamaran cruise in Walvis Bay with a 90-minute quad ride (price on request).
- Free pickup from Swakopmund accommodation; small groups from Walvis Bay pay a transfer fee
- Office open daily (Mon–Sat 08:00–18:00, Sun 09:00–18:00)
- Online booking is closed for most activities in July–August, so phone or email then
Other ways to book#
Several Swakopmund agents, including Charly’s Desert Tours, resell Desert Explorers’ rides at the same prices, and Walvis Bay operators such as Sandwich Dune Tours run their own quad trips. Your hostel or guesthouse can book at no extra cost and will know which slots have space; see Swakopmund backpackers and hostels.
Rules: where quads can and cannot go#
The coastal strip from around Walvis Bay north to the Ugab River is the Dorob National Park, proclaimed in 2010 partly to control off-road driving. The rules are strict:
- Quads may only ride in designated areas. For visitors, that means the dune belt between Swakopmund, Long Beach and Walvis Bay.
- Quads are not allowed on the beaches between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, or on the town beachfronts.
- Gravel plains, vegetated hummocks and riverbeds (including the Swakop River) are off limits. Tracks on the gravel plains can last for decades and destroy lichens and other slow-growing life.
- Parts of the dune belt are breeding grounds for the Damara tern, a small, threatened seabird that nests on open ground. Guides know where these are.
- Riding on your own requires a permit and a valid licence.
Licensed operators work within these rules. Avoid anyone offering to “rent you a quad to ride anywhere”.
Safety tips#
- Listen to the briefing and ask if you are unsure about the throttle or brakes.
- Keep your distance from the rider in front; dune crests hide what is on the other side.
- Approach dune crests slowly and straight. Never ride across a steep slope sideways; that is how quads roll.
- Lean into the hill on side slopes and keep your feet on the footrests.
- Wear the helmet and close it properly. Goggles or sunglasses help a lot when sand is blowing.
- Tell the guide if you want to slow down. Good guides would rather adjust the pace than push a nervous rider.
Best time to go#
Morning rides have the softest light and the calmest wind. Late afternoon rides are the most photogenic, with long shadows on the ridges. Midday works fine on the cool coast, but the light is flat.
Quad biking runs year-round. On occasional winter days with a hot east wind, sand blows hard and tours may be shortened or rescheduled. Our weather guide explains the coastal seasons.
What to wear and bring#
- Closed shoes (trainers are fine)
- Long trousers and a light jacket; even sunny mornings are cool at speed
- Sunglasses or goggles and a buff or scarf against blowing sand
- Sunscreen for exposed skin
- A phone or camera in a zipped pocket or sand-proof bag; there are photo stops, so do not ride one-handed while filming
- Cash for tips and drinks
See our Swakopmund packing list for a full checklist.
Common mistakes#
- Booking the shortest ride to save money. A 30-minute ride is mostly briefing; two hours costs N$890 against N$590 for one and gives you far more real dune riding.
- Showing off on the crest. Most accidents happen when riders accelerate over a dune top without knowing what is on the other side.
- Wearing shorts and sandals. Sand and sun at speed are unpleasant on bare skin.
- Forgetting to ask about pickup time. Allow an extra 30–45 minutes for transfers.
- Riding after a big night out. Swakopmund’s nightlife is fun; quad biking with a hangover is not.
Quad biking with kids#
Children under 9 ride free as passengers with a parent, which makes this one of the few adrenaline activities young families can share. Older children can ride their own quad if the guide is satisfied they can control it; ask about smaller bikes when you book, and pick a one-hour ride for a first go.
Combining quad biking with other activities#
- Sandboarding: The classic combo. Desert Explorers’ 2-hour (N$890) and 3-hour (N$1,100) combos include an hour of lie-down sandboarding; see sandboarding in Swakopmund.
- Living Desert tour: In the morning, then an afternoon quad ride. See the Living Desert tour guide.
- Dolphin cruise: A morning boat trip from Walvis Bay followed by a quad ride in the afternoon. See our Walvis Bay day trip guide.
- Dune 7: The big dune outside Walvis Bay is for climbing, not riding; see our Dune 7 guide.
- Skydiving: Jump in the afternoon after a morning ride. See skydiving in Swakopmund.

How to book#
- Directly with Desert Explorers by phone, email or its online booking page (outside July–August).
- Through your accommodation or a booking agent in town.
- Online through booking platforms if you want confirmation before you arrive.
In peak season (July–August and the December–January holidays) book a few days ahead. The rest of the year, a day’s notice is usually enough. Our Swakopmund tours and packages guide explains how to bundle activities.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a driving licence to go quad biking in Swakopmund?
Not for a guided tour with a licensed operator; the guide leads and you follow in line. Riding on your own in the Dorob National Park requires a permit and a valid licence, which is why almost all visitors go with a tour.
How much does quad biking cost in Swakopmund?
With Desert Explorers, the biggest operator, a ride costs N$490 for 30 minutes, N$590 for one hour, N$690 for 90 minutes and N$890 for two hours in late 2026. The sundowner ride is N$890 and the breakfast run N$1,350. Prices change, so confirm when booking.
Can children go quad biking in Swakopmund?
Yes. Children under 9 can ride free as passengers with a parent, and older children ride their own quad on standard tours if the guide is happy they can handle it. Ask the operator about smaller bikes when you book.
Is quad biking in the dunes dangerous?
It is a motorised activity, so there is some risk, but guided tours start with a briefing and a practice loop and the guide sets the pace. Most accidents happen when riders leave the guide's line or go too fast over a dune crest.
Is quad biking bad for the desert?
Uncontrolled off-road driving does real damage, especially to gravel plains, lichen fields and riverbeds. Licensed operators ride only in the designated dune area of the Dorob National Park, where shifting sand covers tracks quickly.
Which is better, quad biking or sandboarding?
They are different: quad biking is about speed and covering ground, sandboarding is about sliding down big faces and climbing back up. A two-hour combo with one hour of each costs about N$890, the same as a two-hour quad ride.
