The best tours in Swakopmund fall into four groups: desert adventures (sandboarding, quad biking, skydiving), nature tours (the Living Desert and Sandwich Harbour), marine trips from Walvis Bay (catamaran cruises and seal kayaking) and cultural tours (Mondesa township and history walks). In 2026 prices run from approx. N$700 for sandboarding to around N$4,600 for a full-day cruise and Sandwich Harbour combo, and almost every tour includes pickup from your accommodation. The range is the reason the town was named Africa’s best adventure destination at the 2025 Africa Tourism Awards. This guide compares the options, explains how packages work and helps you build the right mix.

Nature and 4x4 tours#
The Living Desert tour#
A 4x4 morning in the dunes with specialist guides who track the “Little Five”: the Namib web-footed gecko, Peringuey’s adder (sidewinder), the Namaqua chameleon, the shovel-snouted lizard and the dancing white lady spider. The two long-established operators are Tommy’s Tours and Safaris (Living Desert Tours) and Living Desert Adventures, run by conservationist Chris Nel.
- Price: approx. N$1,000 per adult, N$550 for children 12 and under

Sandwich Harbour 4x4#
The most spectacular tour on the coast: a 4x4 drive south of Walvis Bay past the lagoon and the Kuiseb delta, along the beach between the surf and the dunes, then up onto 100 m dunes plunging into the Atlantic. Timing depends on the tide. Operators include Sandwich Harbour 4x4, Turnstone Tours, Mola Mola and Catamaran Charters (combos).
- Price: approx. N$2,400–N$3,100 half day
- Warning: do not attempt it as a self-drive without serious soft-sand and tidal experience. Operators plan departures around low tide; you can check the day’s tides in our Swakopmund tide times page.

Self-drive alternatives#
Some of the best excursions do not need a tour at all. The Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive, Spitzkoppe, Henties Bay and the Cape Cross seal colony are straightforward in an ordinary rental car, and much cheaper when three or four people share. So is climbing Dune 7 just outside Walvis Bay. Day tours to most of these are also available if you prefer not to drive. See our best day trips from Swakopmund.
Marine tours from Walvis Bay#
Walvis Bay, 30 minutes south, is the base for all boat and kayak trips. Most operators collect from Swakopmund for a fee or as part of the package.
Catamaran and dolphin cruises#
Morning cruises around the bay to the seal colony at Pelican Point, with regular sightings of dolphins, pelicans and, from about July to November, whales. Seals sometimes hop on board. Fresh Walvis Bay oysters, sparkling wine and snacks are usually included.
- Operators: Catamaran Charters (daily 09:00 departures from the Waterfront) and Mola Mola, running marine tours since 1995
- Price: approx. N$1,450 per adult, about N$800 for children
Kayaking with seals#
Paddle stable sit-on-top kayaks in the sheltered water off Pelican Point while young seals play around you. Eco Marine Kayak Tours and Pelican Point Kayaking run morning trips with 4x4 transfers to the launch point. Our Pelican Point guide explains the peninsula, the lighthouse and the seal colony.
- Price: approx. N$1,300–N$1,600
Read the full Walvis Bay day trip guide, or the Walvis Bay travel guide if you are thinking of staying there for early departures.
Surfing#
Swakopmund’s beach breaks are cold but surfable year-round, and Skeleton Bay near Walvis Bay is one of the longest left-hand waves in the world, for experienced surfers only. Local surf guides and the town’s surf hostel can advise on conditions and gear hire; see our Skeleton Bay surfing guide.
Cultural and history tours#
Mondesa township tours#
A 3–4 hour guided visit to Mondesa and the DRC settlement, usually including a market, a craft workshop and a home-cooked traditional meal. Choose a locally run operator; Explorer Tours, run by Mondesa-born guide Nande Junias, is one of the best reviewed and also offers a bicycle version.
- Price: approx. N$1,000–N$1,500 (international platforms list US$62–US$80 per adult in 2026)
- Read more: Mondesa township tour guide
History and architecture#
Swakopmund’s colonial-era buildings (Woermann House, the Hohenzollern House, the old railway station and the Lutheran church) are easy to see on your own in a couple of hours. Follow our free self-guided history and architecture walk.
Scenic flights#
Swakopmund-based operators such as Bushbird and Sossusvlei Scenic Flights fly small planes over the Namib Sand Sea, Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, the Skeleton Coast shipwrecks and Sandwich Harbour in about two hours. Prices depend on how many seats are filled: roughly N$7,000 per person when five share the plane, and far more for two. Ask the operator to match you with other passengers.
Combo deals and packages#
Swakopmund operators are used to bundling activities, and combos are often the best value.
| Combo | What you get | Approx. price (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Sandboarding + quad biking | About 3 hours in the dunes, both activities | N$1,400–N$1,800 |
| Catamaran cruise + Sandwich Harbour | Morning cruise, lunch, afternoon dunes (7–9 hours) | N$3,600–N$4,600 |
| Living Desert + Sandwich Harbour | Full day, about 8 hours, lunch pack | approx. N$3,700 |
| Cruise + quad ride (“surf and turf” style) | Morning cruise, afternoon quad ride | Ask operators |
Sample self-built packages#

Multi-day tours from Swakopmund#
- Sossusvlei: 2- and 3-day camping or lodge tours, with transport, park fees, meals and a guide, approx. N$6,000–N$12,000 per person. Ask whether you stay inside the park gate for sunrise. See Swakopmund to Sossusvlei and our Namib Desert guide.
- Skeleton Coast and Damaraland: multi-day trips north via Cape Cross, the Brandberg and Twyfelfontein. See our Skeleton Coast guide.
- Overland tours: many Cape Town–Windhoek–Victoria Falls overland trips include two nights in Swakopmund with a free day for optional activities.
- Self-drive instead: if you would rather drive, our Namibia road trip itinerary shows how Swakopmund fits between Sossusvlei and Etosha.
How to book#
- Through your accommodation. The easiest option. Hostels and guesthouses book directly and usually at the operator’s price. See our Swakopmund backpackers and hostels guide.
- Directly with the operator by phone, WhatsApp, email or website. Good for asking detailed questions and sometimes cheaper.
- Online booking platforms. Convenient, with reviews and flexible cancellation, but often slightly more expensive. The booking widget on this page shows bookable options.
- Booking offices in town. Several activity centres in the centre sell a range of tours.
Booking tips#
- Book weather- and tide-dependent tours first (skydiving, scenic flights, Sandwich Harbour, kayaking) so you have spare days if they are postponed.
- Mornings are best. The wind usually picks up from late morning, especially for kayaks, boats and the dunes.
- Check what is included: pickup, lunch, drinks, park and conservation fees, photos.
- Ask about cancellation and refund policies. Many operators charge in full for no-shows or late cancellations.
- Ask about payment. Some smaller operators only take cash.
- Group discounts: ask if you are four or more.
When to go#
- All year: most tours run daily, year-round.
- July–August and mid-December to mid-January: the busiest periods. Book several days ahead.
- July–November: the best chance of seeing whales on Walvis Bay cruises.
- Fog: common on summer mornings; it rarely stops land tours, but can delay skydiving and scenic flights. See the best time to visit Swakopmund and, for the rest of the country, the best time to visit Namibia.
What to bring on tours#
- A windproof jacket and warm layer, even in summer; boats and dunes are cold in the morning.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. UV is strong through the fog.
- Closed shoes for dune tours; clothes you do not mind getting sandy.
- A dry bag and change of clothes for kayaking.
- Water and snacks for self-drive trips.
- Cash for tips and cash-only operators.
- A camera with a cover to keep out sand.
Our Swakopmund packing list has the full list.
Tipping guides#
Tipping is customary. About N$50–N$100 per person for a half-day tour guide, more for full-day tours and drivers, is appreciated. See Swakopmund travel essentials and our Namibia money guide for more on tipping, cards and cash.
Common mistakes#
- Booking Sandwich Harbour on your last day. If the tide or weather cancels it, you have no backup.
- Trying to do everything. Two or three good tours over three days beats a rushed schedule.
- Ignoring the wind. Afternoon kayaking and boat trips are much rougher.
- Not checking pickup arrangements from Walvis Bay. Marine tours start there; confirm whether a transfer from Swakopmund is included.
- Paying a mark-up. Compare the operator’s own price before paying an agent.
