The big three#
1. Tandem skydiving#
Swakopmund is one of the most scenic places on earth to skydive. You fly up over the coast and jump with the dune sea on one side and the Atlantic on the other, freefalling at around 200 km/h before floating down for several minutes under canopy.
- Operator: Ground Rush Adventures (long known as Skydive Swakopmund), in operation since 1997 under the Parachute Association of Namibia
- Altitudes and prices: N$4,900 from 10,000 ft (about 35 seconds freefall), N$5,990 from 12,000 ft (about 45 seconds), N$7,700 from 15,000 ft (about 60 seconds)
- Video: about N$1,470 extra
- Limits: 100 kg weight limit; minimum age 10 with parental consent
Fog and wind can delay jumps, so book early in your stay. Full details in our skydiving in Swakopmund guide.
2. Sandboarding#
Ride a snowboard on the dunes or, more famously, race head-first on a waxed board at speeds of up to around 70–80 km/h. It is the best-value adventure in town.
- Operators: Alter Action (the original, daily trips 09:30–13:30) and Desert Explorers (combos with quads)
- Price: N$700 lie-down, N$800 stand-up, including transport, gear, lunch, drinks and a video
- Fitness: there are no lifts; you walk back up after every run
Read our sandboarding guide for a full comparison of stand-up and lie-down.
3. Quad biking#
Guided rides through the dune belt of the Dorob National Park, from 30-minute tasters to sundowner and breakfast runs.
- Main operator: Desert Explorers, with free pickup in Swakopmund
- Price: N$590 for 1 hour, N$690 for 90 minutes, N$890 for 2 hours; sundowner N$890, breakfast run N$1,350
- Age: children under 9 ride free as passengers
Our quad biking guide covers the park rules and safety tips.
Ocean adventures#
4. Kayaking with seals at Pelican Point#
Pelican Point is the long sand spit that shelters Walvis Bay’s lagoon and harbour, about 40 minutes’ drive south of Swakopmund. Tens of thousands of Cape fur seals haul out near its tip, and paddling a sea kayak among them, with young seals bumping the boat and somersaulting underneath, is unforgettable. Dolphins are often seen too.
- How it works: a 4x4 transfer along the spit, a briefing, then roughly two hours on the water in calm conditions
- Duration: about 4.5 hours including transfers, starting around 07:45–08:00
- Price: approx. N$1,300–1,450 per adult in 2026 (Pelican Point Kayaking N$1,450, or about 10% less online; Catamaran Charters and Desert Explorers N$1,450)
- Premium option: Mola Mola’s kayak experience costs about N$2,820
More on the spit, the lighthouse and the seals in our Pelican Point guide.
5. Dolphin and seal catamaran cruise#
The gentler marine option: a morning cruise from the Walvis Bay Waterfront past the oyster farms to Pelican Point, with seals often jumping aboard, plus dolphins, pelicans and sometimes whales from about July to November. Fresh oysters and sparkling wine are served on board.
- Duration: about 3.5 hours, check-in around 08:30
- Price: N$1,450 per adult and N$800 per child (4–12) with Catamaran Charters; Mola Mola’s cruise with a beach stop is about N$2,190
- Cheaper alternative: Catamaran Charters’ 2.5-hour sundowner cruise, about N$780
- Combo: Desert Explorers’ “Surf and Turf” pairs a morning cruise with an afternoon 90-minute quad ride
See our Walvis Bay day trip guide for how to combine it with flamingos and Dune 7.
6. Surfing and sea fishing#
Experienced surfers come for Skeleton Bay, beyond Pelican Point, home to one of the longest left-hand barrels in the world. It is an expert-only wave in very cold water, reached by 4x4; read our Skeleton Bay surfing guide before you consider it. Closer to town, our Swakopmund beaches guide covers where locals swim and surf; a thick wetsuit is essential all year. Shore and boat fishing charters can be arranged through the activity centres in town.
Desert adventures#
7. Sandwich Harbour 4x4#
About 50 km south of Walvis Bay, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park, tall dunes run straight into the Atlantic at Sandwich Harbour. Guided 4x4 tours drive along the beach around low tide and then roller-coaster over the dunes for some of the most dramatic views in Namibia.
- Duration: half day (4–5 hours) or full day
- Price: approx. N$2,700–3,350 for a half day (Sandwich Harbour 4x4: N$3,095 adult, N$2,195 child); full-day cruise or kayak combos approx. N$4,000–5,200
- Note: departure times follow the tide; always go with a licensed operator unless you are an experienced sand driver
Full details in our Sandwich Harbour tour guide.
8. Climbing Dune 7#
Dune 7, just outside Walvis Bay, is one of the tallest dunes in the area; a height of around 380 m is often quoted, though figures vary. Climbing the ridge is a brutal workout, and some people bring a board to slide down. It lies in the Dorob National Park, so a park fee applies (N$280 per foreign adult plus N$60 per car under the April 2026 tariff; confirm at the gate). Go in the morning to avoid heat and wind. See our Dune 7 guide.
9. Paragliding and hot-air ballooning#
Desert Explorers arranges tandem paragliding over the dunes (about N$1,900 in 2026), depending on wind and pilot availability. The dunes towards Long Beach have long been a favourite spot. Hot-air balloon flights can also be requested, but the classic balloon safaris operate near Sossusvlei, a long way inland; see Swakopmund to Sossusvlei.
In the air#
10. Scenic flights#
If you cannot fit Sossusvlei into your trip by road, a scenic flight from Swakopmund shows you the red dunes, Deadvlei, coastal shipwrecks and Sandwich Harbour in a little over two hours. Shorter coastal flights of about 1.5 hours cover Sandwich Harbour, wrecks and the seal colonies.
- Price: from approx. N$7,000 per person when five passengers share a small plane, rising steeply for two or three passengers
- Booking: through activity centres in town or directly with the scenic-flight companies at Swakopmund airfield
- Tip: ask operators to match you with other travellers to fill the plane
Consider driving instead if you have the time; see Swakopmund to Sossusvlei.
On wheels, hooves and feet#
11. Fat bike tours#
Swakopmund Fat Bike Tours takes small groups out on wide-tyred bikes. The 2-hour Scenic Desert Tour costs about N$520 (N$620 on an e-bike), a 3.5-hour city-and-desert combo about N$860, and a 3.5-hour “Up Close Living Desert” e-bike tour about N$1,000. It is a quiet, eco-friendly way to see the dunes and suits most fitness levels.
12. Horse riding#
Several stables and trail operators around Swakopmund offer outrides through the Swakop River valley, from an hour to a full day, for beginners and experienced riders. Rates and availability change, so ask your accommodation which are currently running and book a day or two ahead. Avoid the midday heat inland.
13. Camel rides#
Short camel rides in the dunes are sold through Desert Explorers, at about N$390 for 30 minutes (N$200 for children aged 4–6). A gentle, photogenic option for families.
14. Rock climbing and hiking at Spitzkoppe#
A couple of hours inland, the granite domes of Spitzkoppe offer scrambling, marked walking and mountain-bike trails, and serious multi-pitch climbing, with ancient rock art and spectacular camping. See our Spitzkoppe day trip guide.
How to plan your adventure days#
Sample 2-day adventure plan#
| Morning | Afternoon | |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Sandboarding (09:30–13:30) | Tandem skydive once the fog clears (around 14:00) |
| Day 2 | Kayaking at Pelican Point or dolphin cruise | Quad biking sundowner ride (16:00) |
Add a third day for Sandwich Harbour or the Living Desert tour. Our 3 days in Swakopmund itinerary has a full plan.
Fog, wind and the weather#
Swakopmund’s morning fog affects some activities more than others. Skydiving and scenic flights need clear skies and are rescheduled if conditions are poor. Sandboarding, quad biking and kayaking usually run in fog, but kayak trips are cancelled when it is too windy. On occasional winter days a hot east wind blows sand hard and may cut activities short. Read our Swakopmund weather guide, or the best time to visit Namibia for the bigger picture.
Booking#
- Direct with operators for the clearest information on what is included
- Through your hostel or guesthouse, which usually costs no more and includes pickup
- Online platforms for instant confirmation before you arrive
In peak periods (July–August and the December–January holidays) book a few days ahead. See our Swakopmund tours and packages guide for bundled options.
Safety and practical tips#
- Be honest about your weight and health, especially for skydiving and horse riding.
- Wear closed shoes for sandboarding and quad biking.
- Protect your phone and camera from sand with zip-lock bags.
- Sign the indemnity, but read it. Check that your travel insurance covers adventure activities.
- Do not book everything on one day. Weather delays are common; spread your activities.
- Carry some cash for tips and for smaller operators.
Our Swakopmund travel essentials, is Swakopmund safe and is Namibia safe guides cover insurance, money and safety in more detail.
Common mistakes#
- Leaving skydiving to the last day. Fog can push it back; book it first.
- Choosing the shortest quad ride. A 30-minute ride is mostly briefing; two hours costs only N$300 more than one.
- Under-estimating the cold. The Atlantic is cold, and mornings on the water can be chilly even in summer.
- Ignoring combos. They are usually cheaper and save transfer time.
- Trying to do everything. Pick three or four activities and leave time to enjoy the town.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best adventure activity in Swakopmund?
For pure adrenaline, a tandem skydive over the dunes and ocean is the headline act. For value, lie-down sandboarding gives you a whole morning of fast runs for N$700, and kayaking with seals at Pelican Point is the best wildlife adventure.
How many days do I need for adventure activities in Swakopmund?
Two to three full days lets you do three or four of the main activities without rushing and leaves room for fog or wind delays. Book skydiving and scenic flights early in your stay for that reason.
How much should I budget for activities in Swakopmund?
In 2026 the main activities cost N$700–800 for sandboarding, N$590–890 for a 1–2 hour quad ride, about N$1,450 for a dolphin cruise or seal kayaking, approx. N$2,700–3,350 for a half day at Sandwich Harbour and N$4,900–7,700 for a tandem skydive. Three activities typically come to N$3,000–7,000 per person.

Yes. Sandboarding includes lunch and a video, a 2-hour quad-and-sandboarding combo costs about N$890, fat bike tours start at about N$520, and climbing a dune or watching flamingos costs only a park fee or nothing. Many hostels book activities with free pickup.
Do I need to book adventure activities in advance?
In July–August and the December–January holidays, book a few days ahead; some operators close online booking in peak season, so phone or email. At other times a day's notice is often enough, except for skydiving and scenic flights.
Are Swakopmund adventure activities safe?
The established operators run guided activities with safety briefings and equipment, and tandem skydiving is overseen by the Parachute Association of Namibia. Follow your guide's instructions, wear the protective gear and be honest about your weight and health.
