A backpacker can enjoy Swakopmund on roughly N$500–N$1,050 a day in 2026 by sleeping in a dorm, cooking at the hostel and walking everywhere. The big costs are the activities: sandboarding is approx. N$700, a Sandwich Harbour tour N$2,400 or more and a skydive nearly N$5,000. Plan which one or two experiences matter most, and the rest of the town is easy and cheap to enjoy.

    Getting there cheaply#

    • Shared shuttle from Windhoek: approx. N$350–N$700 one way, door to door, with daily departures. Fares aren’t published online, so ask for a quote; hostels can book.
    • Coach: approx. N$250–N$400 one way when the Windhoek–coast coach is running; check before you count on it.
    • Shared rental car: approx. N$600–N$1,000 a day for a small car plus fuel (petrol N$26.58 a litre at the coast in October 2026), split between travellers.

See our how to get to Swakopmund and Windhoek to Swakopmund guides for operators, timetables and the drive.

    Cheap places to sleep#

Accommodation is the easiest place to save money. Dorm beds cost approx. N$280–N$500, camping approx. N$120–N$250 per person, and private rooms at the hostels approx. N$700–N$1,100. The best-rated budget options in 2026 are Skeleton Beach Backpackers in Vineta and Salty Jackal Surf Camp near the centre (both include breakfast) and the long-running Desert Sky Backpackers in town.

If two of you are travelling together, small guesthouses such as Pebble Stone House (from approx. N$550 per person sharing, with breakfast) or Haus Garnison (rooms with kitchenettes) can cost little more than two dorm beds. Groups of four or more staying several nights should also compare holiday flats, which come with a full kitchen; see our self-catering and Airbnb guide.

Our full guide to Swakopmund backpackers and hostels compares every budget option, and the best hotels in Swakopmund covers the mid-range and upmarket end.

    Eating on a budget#

    Self-catering#

Every hostel has a kitchen and most have a braai (barbecue). Swakopmund has large supermarkets, including Shoprite on Sam Nujoma Avenue and the shops at the Platz am Meer waterfront mall, where meat is excellent value. A braai of boerewors, steak, bread and salad for four costs far less than one restaurant main each.

Typical supermarket prices, as a rough guide (approx. 2026; fruit and vegetables are relatively expensive, meat is cheap):

    Item Approx. price
    Loaf of white bread N$13–N$25
    1 litre long-life milk N$18–N$25
    12 eggs N$35–N$60
    Boerewors (per kg) N$110–N$135
    Beef steak (per kg) N$135–N$170
    1.5 litre bottled water N$12–N$25
500 ml can of Windhoek Lager (bottle store) N$22–N$28
5-litre box of South African wine N$210–N$260

    Cheap eats#

    • German bakeries: a filled Brötchen from a bakery such as Przybylski on Daniel Tjongarero Avenue makes a cheap breakfast or packed lunch.
    • Kapana: street-grilled beef in Mondesa, around N$30–N$60 a portion. Go with a guide or local.
    • Hafeni Traditional Restaurant: traditional Namibian dishes in Mondesa at local prices.
    • Pizza: Gabriele’s, Napolitana and Sound Garden are good-value dinners.
    • Kücki’s Pub: not the cheapest, but generous portions and good value for a proper night out.

    Treat yourself once#

Oysters are one of the best bargains in Swakopmund, far cheaper than in Europe. Even on a tight budget, it is worth one dinner at The Tug, Jetty 1905 or Ocean Cellar. See our top restaurants in Swakopmund.

What activities really cost (approx. 2026)#

    Activity Approx. price per person
    Lie-down sandboarding (half day) N$700
    Stand-up sandboarding (half day) N$800
    Quad biking, 1 hour N$600–N$750
    Quad biking, 2 hours N$900–N$1,100
    Quad and sandboarding combo N$1,400–N$1,800
    Living Desert tour N$1,000
Walvis Bay catamaran cruise approx. N$1,450
Kayaking with seals at Pelican Point N$1,300–N$1,600
Sandwich Harbour 4x4, half day N$2,400–N$3,100
    Tandem skydive, 10,000 ft N$4,700–N$4,900
Welwitschia Drive self-drive permit approx. N$280 per foreign adult plus vehicle fee

Which activities give the best value?#

    1. Lie-down sandboarding is the cheapest big thrill and a full morning out. See sandboarding in Swakopmund.
    2. The Living Desert tour is unique and suits non-adrenaline travellers. See the Living Desert tour guide.
    3. The Welwitschia Drive with a shared car is the cheapest day trip. See the Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive.
    4. Sandwich Harbour is expensive but, for many, the highlight of Namibia’s coast. Save for it if you can. See the Sandwich Harbour tour guide.

Free and almost-free things to do#

    • Walk out to the end of the jetty at sunset.
    • Stroll along the beachfront from the Mole to the Swakop River mouth.
    • Do a self-guided walk past the Woermann House, the Hohenzollern House, the Lutheran church and the old railway station; see our history and architecture walk.
    • Browse the craft markets near the lighthouse and the jetty (bargain politely).
    • Watch surfers and the sea from the Mole.
    • Visit the Walvis Bay lagoon to see flamingos (free if you have transport); our Walvis Bay travel guide has the best viewing spots.
    • Spend an afternoon on the sand; our Swakopmund beaches guide compares the town beaches.
    • Climb a dune at the edge of town near the river, or Dune 7 near Walvis Bay (a park entry fee applies there).

    Total approx. N$450–N$800

Add one paid activity every day or two and you have a full, varied stay for well under N$1,500 a day.

Tours or self-drive: what saves more?#

Day trip Guided tour per person Self-drive for 4 people, per person
Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive Tour prices vary; ask approx. N$450–N$600 (car share, fuel, permit)
Spitzkoppe Tour prices vary; ask approx. N$450–N$700 (car share, fuel, community fee)
Cape Cross Tour prices vary; ask approx. N$550–N$750 (car share, fuel, park fee)
Sandwich Harbour N$2,400–N$3,100 Not recommended without a guide

Self-drive estimates assume a small rental car at approx. N$600–N$1,000 a day split four ways, plus fuel and per-person fees. Alone, a tour is often cheaper. Gravel roads are slow, so allow plenty of time.

    Budgeting by season#

    • Mid-December to mid-January: the busiest and most expensive time, with domestic and South African holidaymakers. Dorms and campsites sell out and some places charge peak rates. Book early.
    • Easter and Namibian school holidays: busy, especially at weekends.
    • February–April: warm, quieter and good value.
    • May–August: cooler and often foggy, with some discounts outside school holidays; July–August is busy with European travellers on safari circuits.
    • September–November: windier afternoons, steady prices.

See the best time to visit Swakopmund for the weather month by month.

    Getting around cheaply#

    • Walk. The centre is compact and flat; most things are within 20 minutes.
    • Shared taxis. Short hops within town cost about N$20–N$60 per person. At night, ask your hostel to call a trusted driver.
    • Tour pickups. Almost all activities include free pickup from your accommodation, so you do not need a car for them.
    • Share a rental car for day trips; post on your hostel’s notice board or chat group. See our car rental guide.

    Money-saving tips#

    1. Avoid the December–January peak. Prices and demand are highest from mid-December to mid-January.
    2. Book direct. Hostels and small operators sometimes give better rates than booking platforms.
    3. Ask for combos. Operators sell sandboarding and quad combos, or cruise and Sandwich Harbour combos, for less than booking separately. See our tours and packages guide.
    4. Choose breakfast-included hostels. It saves N$50–N$100 a day.
    5. Pay in N$ (or rand). Paying in euros or US dollars, where accepted, usually means a poor exchange rate, and when a card machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in N$.
    6. Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres and withdraw larger amounts to limit fees.
    7. Group up for day trips. A rental car for four costs less per person than any tour.
    8. Bring warm clothes. Buying a fleece in town because you are cold is an avoidable expense.

    Common budget mistakes#

    • Booking every activity. Choose two or three; doing everything can cost N$10,000 or more.
    • Forgetting park fees. Day trips into national parks carry daily conservation fees of approx. N$280 per foreign adult in 2026, plus vehicle fees.
    • Underestimating fuel. Gravel-road day trips to Spitzkoppe or Cape Cross are 250–300 km round trips, which at 2026 prices (around N$27 a litre) is roughly N$600–N$900 of fuel for a small car.
    • Leaving valuables in a car. Replacing a phone or passport will wreck any budget. See is Swakopmund safe.
    • Not checking what is included. Some tours include lunch, drinks and park fees; others do not.

    Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need per day in Swakopmund?

A backpacker sleeping in a dorm and cooking most meals can manage on roughly N$500–N$1,050 a day in 2026, before activities. Mid-range travellers should budget about N$1,600–N$2,850 per person per day, and comfort travellers N$3,400 or more.

    Is Swakopmund expensive?

Accommodation and food are moderately priced by international standards, but the big activities and tours add up quickly. A three-day visit with two activities costs a backpacker roughly N$3,300–N$4,900 in total, and every extra big tour adds N$1,000–N$3,000.

What is the cheapest activity in Swakopmund?

Among paid tours, lie-down sandboarding at approx. N$700 is the best value. Free options include walking the jetty and the Mole, the beachfront, the historic town centre and watching flamingos at the Walvis Bay lagoon if you have transport.

Can I use South African rand in Swakopmund?

Yes. The rand is legal tender in Namibia at a 1:1 rate with the Namibian dollar, and shops accept it. Namibian dollars are not accepted in South Africa, so spend them before you leave.

Is it cheaper to self-drive or take tours from Swakopmund?

For one person, tours are usually cheaper. For three or four people sharing a rental car, self-drive day trips such as the Welwitschia Drive, Spitzkoppe or Cape Cross are much cheaper, but Sandwich Harbour should still be done with a guide.

When is the cheapest time to visit Swakopmund?

Outside the mid-December to mid-January holiday peak, Easter and Namibian school holidays. February to April and May to June are usually the best-value periods for accommodation.
