Updated 6 min readBy Swakopmund Backpackers

The Delight Swakopmund is a modern, colourful hotel in the town centre, run by the Namibian Gondwana Collection, a short walk from the Mole and the beach. It has 54 rooms (44 twin rooms and 10 family lofts), all bed and breakfast, and in 2026 Gondwana lists a rate of approx. N$2,106 per person sharing. It is a strong mid-range choice for families and anyone who wants a fresh, central hotel without paying beachfront prices.

This is an independent guide based on Gondwana’s official information and current listings, covering location, rooms, prices, facilities and who the hotel suits.

Location#

The Delight stands on the corner of Theo-Ben Gurirab Avenue and Nathaniel Maxuilili Street, in the grid of streets that makes up Swakopmund’s centre. It is not on the seafront, but you can walk to:

  • The Mole and Palm Beach: a few minutes’ walk.
  • The lighthouse, museum and jetty: about 10 minutes on foot.
  • Most of the town’s restaurants, cafés and tour offices: within 5 to 15 minutes.

The Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre, in the old railway station, is on the same avenue. Walvis Bay Airport is about 40 km away, and Windhoek about four hours by road. See how to get to Swakopmund.

About the hotel#

The Delight opened on 1 November 2015 and was the first town hotel for the Gondwana Collection, a Namibian group best known for its lodges near Sossusvlei, Etosha, the Fish River Canyon and elsewhere. Rather than a safari-lodge feel, Gondwana went for something “fresh” and urban here: a bright building with bold colours, playful furniture and twin rooms decorated in tones inspired by the ocean and the lighthouse.

The concept is deliberately simple. The hotel concentrates on comfortable rooms and a big breakfast, and leaves dinner to Swakopmund’s many restaurants, which the staff will happily book for you.

Rooms#

Room type How many Beds Sleeps Approx. rate (2026)
Twin Room 44 (including one wheelchair-friendly room) Twin beds 2 adults (plus a child or infant on request) N$2,106 pps, B&B
Family Loft 10 Twin beds downstairs and twin beds upstairs in a loft 4 N$2,106 pps, B&B

Every room is en suite, with:

  • Air conditioning and heating (useful on cold, foggy coastal nights).
  • A safe, satellite TV and a hairdryer.
  • A mini fridge and a tea and coffee station.
  • Free, unlimited Wi-Fi.

The family lofts are split-level, with beds on two floors. They are good for parents with older children who want a bit of separation, but the stairs make them less practical with toddlers.

Child policy#

  • 0–5 years: free.
  • 6–13 years: 50% of the bed-and-breakfast rate.

For a family of four with two young children in a loft, that makes The Delight noticeably cheaper than most central hotels of a similar standard.

Breakfast, bar and food#

Breakfast is the hotel’s signature. Gondwana promotes it as the best breakfast in town, with fresh oysters and sparkling wine on offer alongside the usual buffet, so you start the day with a taste of the coast.

During the day and evening the bar serves:

  • Coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
  • Light meals, finger food and snacks.
  • Cocktails and other drinks.

There is no dinner restaurant. That is not much of a drawback in Swakopmund, where some of the country’s best restaurants are within walking distance, but book ahead in peak season. Our top restaurants in Swakopmund guide has the options, and the nightlife guide covers where to go afterwards.

Facilities and services#

  • 24-hour front desk.
  • Secure parking.
  • Garden.
  • Laundry service.
  • Curio shop.
  • Two small meeting rooms (for up to 22 and 8 people).
  • Help with booking activities and restaurants.
  • Visa and Mastercard accepted.

There is no swimming pool listed. Activities such as quad biking, sandboarding, boat trips and skydiving are run by outside operators, and the hotel can book them for you. See the best things to do in Swakopmund.

Getting there without a car#

Gondwana’s own Go2 shuttle lists one-way transfers to The Delight from Windhoek, Sesriem (Namib Desert Lodge) and the Twyfelfontein area for approx. N$850 per person, valid from November 2026 to October 2027. That is useful if you are travelling between Gondwana lodges without a rental car. For other options, see Windhoek to Swakopmund.

What is nearby#

Because The Delight is in the middle of town, most of Swakopmund’s sights are on foot:

  • The Mole and Palm Beach for sunset walks and the sheltered beach.
  • The old railway station, now the Swakopmund Hotel, on the same avenue, plus Woermann House, the Lutheran church and the other colonial buildings on our history and architecture walk.
  • The jetty, a classic spot for a sundowner.
  • Tour offices and cafés along the main streets, for booking a Living Desert tour or a Sandwich Harbour trip.

For activities further out, operators collect guests from the hotel. Sandboarding and quad biking happen in the dune belt just south of town, and Walvis Bay, with its lagoon flamingos and boat cruises, is about 30 minutes by car. If you have three days, our 3-day Swakopmund itinerary shows how to combine them, and the free things to do in Swakopmund guide helps balance the budget.

Who The Delight suits#

Good for:

  • Families: family lofts plus a generous child policy.
  • Couples and friends who want a modern, central hotel at a mid-range price.
  • Self-drive travellers on a Gondwana-heavy itinerary, since you can book everything in one place.
  • Anyone who loves a big breakfast.

Less good for:

  • Travellers who want sea views from the room.
  • Anyone who prefers to eat dinner where they sleep.
  • Backpackers on a tight budget: see Swakopmund backpackers and hostels instead.
  • Couples who want a double bed: Gondwana describes the rooms as twin rooms, so ask if you need the beds pushed together.

Pros and cons#

Pros Cons
Central, walkable location near the Mole No sea views from the rooms
Modern, colourful design and heating in rooms No dinner on site
Family lofts and generous child policy Twin beds rather than doubles
Breakfast with oysters and bubbly Books up early in peak season
Secure parking and 24-hour front desk Loft stairs are tricky with small children

Is The Delight worth it?#

For most mid-range travellers, yes. At approx. N$4,200 per night for two people, The Delight costs about half of a standard room at the Strand Hotel while being only a few minutes’ walk further from the sea. You lose the beachfront view and the on-site restaurants, but you gain modern rooms, a well-known breakfast and very good value for families.

If you want more historical character, the Hansa Hotel is in a similar price range per person. If you want a pool and lots happening on site, look at the Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre.

Booking tips#

  1. Book direct or through your Gondwana itinerary. Gondwana has its own membership card and special offers (check the conditions on its website), and can package lodges, shuttles and car rental together.
  2. Book early for December–January and Easter. Ten family lofts do not go far in school holidays.
  3. Ask for the right beds. Mention if you need the wheelchair-friendly room or a cot.
  4. Arrive after 14:00. Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 10:00; early check-in and late check-out depend on availability.
  5. Reserve dinner when you book your room. The front desk can do this for you.
  6. Bring layers. Even with heating, Swakopmund evenings are cool all year. See our Swakopmund packing list.
